This study guide compares the “Lansdowne” portrait of President George Washington (1796) with Jacques-Louis David’s painting of “The Emperor Napoleon in his Study in the Tuileries” (1812). There is a copy of the image, some discussion of the historical context, a description of what is in the image, an analysis of its content and meaning, and links to further readings on the topic. It is in the form of a PDF of a “slide show” which can be used in the class room for further study and examination.
